5/18/2023 – Another attack in the night

The photo in this post is from “missile cemetery” in the east of Ukraine. These are the pieces of short-range missiles. The long-range missiles can weight 1,500-4,500 kg, that’s why even when they are shot in the air their broken pieces can cause a lot of damage.

From Maia Mikhaluk in Kyiv (449th day): In early morning hours Kyiv was under 9th missile attack since beginning of May. Once again ruzzia shot 30 missiles at Ukraine. All the missiles that were targeting Kyiv were shot by our air defense. The debris of those missile caused some damage, but amazingly no one was killed.

This has been almost our nightly routine lately. Last night the air raid started at 11:20pm. We were getting ready for bed. I stayed awake reading until air raid stopped. There was a warning though that ten ruzzian military planes had taken off at some distant air base and if they carried missiles there would be a new air raid around 3am. And so at 3:20am I woke up to an air raid and couldn’t sleep for a while. At some point I finally dozed off, only to be rudely woken to a very loud explosion that felt very close. There was a flash of light and something seemed to slam into the ground. Then there were some more distant explosions that sounded like anti-missile defense. We stayed in bed rationalizing that since our windows didn’t fly out it must have been not as close as it felt.

The light behind window curtains was turning orange. I got up to look outside to survey if the buildings around us were intact. They were. The orange glow was from beautiful sunrise.

There was a poll ran by one of the news telegram channels that we read for immediate updates. The poll showed that only 4% of people went to bomb shelters. 12% went to the windowless part of their apartment/house (like a corridor). The rest just stayed in bed, hoping for the best.

It’s estimated that since the beginning of the invasion ruzzia shot at Ukraine at least 8,000 long range missiles. The short range missiles are impossible to count – they are literally countless.
