5/28/2023 – “There are no atheists in the trenches…”

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 458):

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
Psalm 8:1

According to a recent survey (https://cutt.ly/OwqSIdok), this full-scale war has affected the religious situation in Ukraine. 29% of Ukrainians said their faith in God has increased over the past year, and only 7% said they got disappointed with God. Thus, to the question “What helps you deal with uncertainty?” a majority of respondents (32%) said they trust God and His will. 58% said they pray regularly (compared to 38% in 2020) and ask God to help Ukraine withstand all the trials (34%) and protect our defenders (30%).

This change may be partially explained by the way the church responded to the full-scale war: chaplains go to the front with the soldiers of the Armed Forces, Christian volunteers evacuate the wounded and civilians, churches collect humanitarian aid, buy ammunition, take care of refugees, and help treat deep psychological wounds.

The journalist concluded the article by stating, “There are no atheists in the trenches. This is good news: we carry our God with us and remain connected to Him, wherever we are and whatever happens to us. We have not rejected Him, despite the troubles that have befallen us, despite the prayers that have not been answered, despite the innocent lives that have been trampled upon. The Bucha massacre horrified the world. But it did not kill either God or humanity in us.”

I praise God for this report, even though it’s heartbreaking to remember everything our people have to go through. May the name of the Lord be glorified in Ukraine and in all the earth.

Blessed be Your name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name.
Blessed be Your name
When I’m found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be Your name.
Every blessing You pour out,
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say…
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name.
You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, Blessed be Your name!
