Today’s picture – 6-year-old Mark and 8-year-old Alisa, residents of the building hit by a drone in Kyiv last night, stand in front of their home. “How did we survive it?” – “I don’t know…” – “Why did it happen to me? Now, I don’t know if we’ll be able to live here.” The conversations Ukrainian children have. Photo by Serhii Nuzhnenko (RFE/RL)

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 461):

The Lord tests the righteous,
but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
Let him rain coals on the wicked;
fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.
Psalm 11:5-6

Last night was really loud for the residents of Kyiv. During last night’s attack, Russia launched 31 kamikaze drones. Our air defense shot down 29 of them. Unfortunately, one of the drones hit a high-rise apartment building in Kyiv, destroying two upper floors, killing one person, and injuring 7. Debris from downed drones hit residential buildings and cars in five city districts.

Everyone is pretty shaken after such nights. People share stories of their children responding to the attacks from the air. Someone wrote about their children singing patriotic songs during the sirens. Another posted about their young daughter throwing herself at the hamster cage during the explosions to shield them with her body. Someone wrote that their daughter profoundly noticed: “The sirens are wailing. It means someone may die soon. Perhaps even us.”

Words cannot describe it. These children will grow up with these memories of their formative years, and we can only pray for healing from this trauma.

The journalists overheard a conversation between two children in front of the building that was hit during the night attack. The 6-year-old boy asks, “How did we survive it?” – “I don’t know,” is the response of an 8-year-old girl.

  1. Our Father in heaven,
    Deliver us from evil
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

  2. Psalm 9:3
When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.

4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.

5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.

6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.

7 But the Lord shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.

8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.

9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

11 Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.

12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:

14 That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.

15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.

16 The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

19 Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight.

20 Put them in fear, O Lord: that the nations may know themselves to be but men.
