8/17/2023 – How do you not lose your balance in this whirlwind?

From Ira Kapitonova near Kyiv (Day 539):

I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 89:1

I remember an old anecdote (or was it a folk tale?) in which two neighbors meet, and their conversation goes back and forth: “So, how are you?” – “I found a coin on the road” – “Oh, that’s very good.” – “Well, it’s not so good because it was chipped.” – “Oh, that’s very bad.” – “Well, it’s not so bad because I bought a sack of peas with it.” – “Oh, that’s very good.” – “Well, it’s not so good because…” And this exchange continues forever.

I remembered that story because that’s what’s going on in my mind and what I see in interviews with many experts regarding what the upcoming fall/winter season might bring. We survived the past winter and already have much experience dealing with a blackout (Oh, that’s very good.) At the same time, our enemies learned from their mistakes and keep targeting critical infrastructure even now. (Oh, that’s very bad.) However, we are better prepared, and our power engineers can stock up on the equipment and supplies needed to restore power quickly. (Oh, that’s very good.) The supply of needed components is limited and expensive, and no one was ready for a war and damage of such scale. (Oh, that’s very bad.) But this season is only temporary, and we’ve seen how the people of Ukraine can unite to support each other and stand strong against the enemy’s schemes. (Oh, that’s very good.) But….

Do you see what I mean? And this rollercoaster continues into all the other essential questions and big news. The glass goes from half-empty to half-full, to completely dry, to overflowing in a matter of minutes.
How do you not lose your balance in this whirlwind? You make a choice. You choose to trust God, to appeal to His steadfast love, to remember His faithfulness in the past, and claim His promises for the future. He is our anchor and solid rock in this storm. May we be able to stand firm in Him.
