From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 637):
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
Psalm 37:4-5
I didn’t have to try too hard to wake my son up in the morning — I just had to tell him it was snowing. The first snow of the season always feels magical, and when you see the kids fully committed to enjoying every moment, you are also filled with excitement.
Unfortunately, the reality of war has ruined the beauty of snow for us (the adults; the kids, thankfully, are still fascinated with snow). Snow means the onset of cold weather. We are thankful for the extended and unusually warm fall season, but we wish for the winter to be mild as well. My heart goes out to the soldiers in trenches, to those whose homes were damaged during shelling or missile attacks, to those who cannot afford to keep their houses warm. Cold weather conditions mean an increased risk of frostbite and sickness.
It was also reported that Ukraine experienced an energy deficit tonight and had to resort to import. The temperature drop significantly increased energy consumption, so our power system is under much pressure, which the Russians have been waiting for.
It’s amazing how many thoughts snow can bring.

Ira, where I live, we had our first snowfall in late October. We got about as much as you did. Yes, for children it was magical. Before I retired, it brought a sense o dread having to drive to work and work in the snow and cold. For you and all Ukraine, it had another level of dread that dwarfs anything I have ever experienced. We keep praying for all Ukraine!!

Written for soldiers in the world war:
I’ll be home for Christmas.
You can plan on me.
Dreams of snow and mistletoe
and presents on the tree.
Christmas Eve will find me
where the love-light gleams.
I’ll be home for Christmas,
if only in my dreams.
