12/30/2023 – Should anyone be shocked that the missiles hit a maternity ward and a shopping mall in Dnipro or crashed into an apartment building in Odesa?

Arise, O God, defend your cause;
remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
Psalm‬ ‭74:22‬

I kept putting off writing today’s update because I felt angry, helpless, and numb at the same time. What is there to say after this morning’s attack? Should anyone be surprised that Russia launched 122 missiles and 36 drones, this being the most massive attack yet? Should anyone be shocked that the missiles hit a maternity ward and a shopping mall in Dnipro or crashed into an apartment building in Odesa? Should we even bother to mention “minor” damage in Kyiv, Lviv, or the Cherkasy region?

I am devastated and disgusted. What should be an adequate reaction to 30 people killed and over 160 injured in various regions of Ukraine?

You know, all of that does not surprise me. However, I am still amazed by our people and God’s mercy:

  • I am grateful that we are in the village now, so our son didn’t hear the explosions or see the smoke rising over his beloved Kyiv.
  • I am grateful there were no casualties in the maternity ward — all the newborns and young mothers had been taken to safety as soon as the sirens went off.
  • When burning debris fell on a car, its owner got into the vehicle on fire to take it away from other cars and buildings.
  • People kept sharing messages from businesses in the affected cities, saying, “We apologize for the delay as our building was hit with a missile, but you can expect your package to be shipped by the end of the day.”

I don’t know what can stop Russia in its bloodthirsty madness, but I know that we won’t be able to make it without God’s steadfast love and mercy. Arise, oh Lord, and avenge the innocent blood.
