1/14/2024 – I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 689):

‭‭I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm‬ ‭89:1‬ ‭

Last night’s warning turned out to be true. We woke up around 6:30 am from an air raid notification on my phone (strategic bombers launched missiles) and slumbered into the hallway to finish sleeping on our beanbags. Thankfully, Kyiv wasn’t attacked this morning, but we must treat every threat with caution.

I realized that one of the sources of our exhaustion is the constant need to be alert, even when you are asleep. I’ve heard a few people say they dream of the day when they will have deep, uninterrupted, peaceful sleep. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for our defenders or people living in the active combat zone.

Another air raid caught us around noon. A bomber launching ballistic missiles took off in Russia, which meant the danger was not immediate but possible. We used this as an excuse to have a family movie time (in the safety of our apartment hallway). Sometimes, I feel a little guilty about turning these horrible circumstances into something that could be remembered as fun, yet I know that it’s the only way to remain sane in this insanity. Our children will not get another childhood as reimbursement for the one stolen by Russia, so we do our best to make memories and cherish our time together.
