3/9/2024 – How Russian war criminals violate the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war

Russia is know for its disrespect of international law. It has been committing war crimes in Ukraine since 2014, when it first invaded our country.

In two years of full-scale war, numerous cases of torture, rape, sexual violence, and even execution of Ukrainian POWs were recorded.

Inhuman tortures and executions: how Russian war criminals violate the rights of Ukrainian prisoners of war 

From: Ukraine.ua πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦As of January 2024, more than 8,000 people are currently held in Russian captivity (including more than 1,600 civilians). However, tens of thousands of people, both civilians and prisoners of war, are considered missing, reportedYurii Taranyuk, a representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Prisoners of war (POWs) are combatants who have fallen into the hands of the enemy (or specific non-combatants), and they are protected by international humanitarian law, in particular, by the Geneva Conventions of 1949. 

Among others, the Geneva Convention (III) forbids violence against people in captivity: murders, mutilations, ill-treatment, torture, and insults to human dignity, offensive and humiliating treatment.
