‭Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer;
from the end of the earth I call to you
when my heart is faint.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I,
for you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the enemy.
Psalm 61:1-3

Our apartment building lost power supply tonight. It may be an introduction to rolling blackouts. Because of the intense attacks on our energy system throughout this spring, there is a substantial energy deficit, which increased this week because of unusually cold weather (just above freezing at night and lots of crops damaged by frostbite).
I can’t say we’re happy about it – it is an inconvenience, but we are not panicking. We were preparing for a dark winter, so at least we have more sunlight and less cold now. In case of blackouts, we’ll need to get back into the habit of additional planning, but we already know what it’s like (even though our family went through blackouts in the village, not in a city last year).

Do you know what my first thought was when the lights went out? I praised God. I thanked God that we were in the safety of our home, that we were not under the constant shelling, and that blackouts are an inconvenience but not a threat to life. As I was tucking my son in bed tonight, he said he once heard a saying, “Even in the dark, we can see the light,” so it is one more reason to praise God.
