5/28/2024 — As soon as the power is cut, the streets rumble with a chorus of generators…

From: Maia Mikhaluk in Kyiv (824th day)

Kyiv is beautiful during any time of the year, but especially so in the spring! So many trees and flowers are blooming! The air is filled with the aromas of blooms and the buzz of bees. This year, though, in addition to air raid sirens, the fragrance of flowers and the sound of bees are overpowered by the fumes and noise of generators. Since ruzzians significantly damaged our energy infrastructure with massive missile strikes in March-April, we already have several hours a day when the electricity is shut down.

As soon as the power is cut, the streets rumble with a chorus of generators. Almost every coffee shop, restaurant, store, and the bank now has a generator. Everyone tries to continue functioning as normal as possible.

But almost every time the light goes off, there is a nagging thought: If we are already having blackouts due to a shortage of power during the warm part of the year when no energy is needed for heat, how much worse will it be in the winter, and what do we need to prepare for it?
