6/6/2024 — ‭O my God, make them like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind…

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 833)

These days have been challenging. Both yesterday and today, our apartment building had electricity in 3-hour slots with 7-hour blackouts in between. It doesn’t drastically affect our family. We can go to work (and have generators there). We are healthy and strong enough to walk up and down the stairs. We have a small campsite gas stove, so we can boil water or warm up food as needed (even though hot food is not necessary in the summer heat). We have power banks to survive a couple of hours without electricity. We are even lucky enough to have running water (even though it’s cold) during blackouts. All of those are fine, especially since the weather is nice and sunlight lasts until past 9 pm.

However, during these blackouts, I can’t get rid of the nasty, nagging thoughts about the coming winter. Some experts say we might be getting only a couple of hours of electricity a day. What would that be like in freezing temperatures with dusk setting in around 4 pm? What would that be like for families with young children or the elderly? How would that affect everyone’s work and school? I can go on with my questions, but every time, I remind myself that God has been faithful in the past, and there’s no reason to doubt Him now. Even if everything goes wrong, He will find a way to care and provide.

Meanwhile, I keep praying for God’s justice.

‭O my God, make them like whirling dust,
like chaff before the wind.
As fire consumes the forest,
as the flame sets the mountains ablaze,
so may you pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your hurricane!
Fill their faces with shame,
that they may seek your name, O Lord.
Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever;
let them perish in disgrace,
that they may know that you alone,
whose name is the Lord,
are the Most High over all the earth.
Psalm 83:13-18
