6/8/2024 — With his documents officially restored, he says, “I’m Ukrainian again now!”

Today’s picture and story were shared by Serhii Okunev/NV.

‭Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
and grant us your salvation.
Psalm 85:7

I saw this picture today. An 84-year-old man looks genuinely happy. He fled from occupied Ocheretyny under shelling. The Russian soldiers took away his passport, so he needed to get a new one.

“It was scary, horrifying. I wasn’t afraid of being killed. I was afraid I would be taken to Russia. That’s what really scared me. I really didn’t want to go to Russia because I’m Ukrainian,” he said. With his documents officially restored, he says, “I’m Ukrainian again now!”

I can’t imagine what life in occupation must be like if we hear so many elderly people risk their lives and flee under shelling just to be in the territory under Ukraine’s control.
