New Voice of Ukraine 🇺🇦 Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has explained why his country lifted its veto on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in a Facebook post on June 14.
Hungary’s position from the very beginning was that “respect for the rights of national minorities must be a prerequisite for any further progress,” said Szijjártó.
“Some member states did not want to hear about this condition, but we made it clear that we insist on restoring the rights of minorities to preserve their national identity, use their mother tongue and study in their mother tongue,” he said.
After a fierce debate in Brussels on the evening of June 14, an agreement was reached and all Hungarian conditions were included in the framework document for negotiations with Ukraine, Szijjártó added.
“So now we have a document from Brussels that says that Ukraine should return to the Hungarians of Transcarpathia the rights taken away from them in recent years,” he wrote.
