6/18/2024 — I had a lovely dream last night…

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 845)

‭In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Psalm 95:4-5

I had a lovely dream last night. In my dream, I took my students on a field trip. It was a nice sunny day, with birds chirping and dew glistening on the grass. Most of all, I remember the feeling of safety, peace, and serenity in my dream. When I woke up, I still had that feeling for a few minutes. Until I remembered the reality we live in.

Tonight, my husband and I talked about how it feels so surreal to live ordinary lives in Kyiv while people lay their lives on the frontlines. I know that we all try to keep as much “ordinary” as possible, even in heavily shelled Kharkiv, Sumy, or Kherson, because that’s what our sanity depends on. At the same time, we must never forget the price.
