From: New Voice of Ukraine 🇺🇦 Ukraine has to win its war against Russia before joining NATO, the White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said at the briefing on June 17.
This statement echoes NATO’s concerns about Ukraine’s immediate membership in the Alliance, as it may trigger NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause.
“Regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership, both the Alliance and the United States have stated that it has to first win this war,” Kirby said.
The U.S. is doing everything possible to ensure Ukrainian victory.
Anyway, persistent security threat to Ukrainian people will still remain, even after the war ends – as Ukraine will still face a lengthy border with Russia.
“That is why President Joe Biden believes NATO is Ukraine’s future,” Kirby noted.
“There are many steps that need to be taken before they can join the Alliance, just like any other member.”
