Warsaw is considering a proposal to shoot down Russian missiles heading toward Poland in the western regions of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said on July 12, according to the BBC.
The proposal was included in the bilateral agreement between Ukraine and Poland on security guarantees, which obliges Warsaw to study this option. But at this stage, “it’s just an idea,” Sikorski said at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington.
It is dangerous for Poles to shoot down missiles over Poland when they enter its airspace for a few seconds, the diplomat added.
“Our dilemma is as follows,” Sikorski said. “If we shoot down the missiles only when they enter our airspace, the debris will pose a threat to our citizens and our property. And Ukrainians say: ‘Please, we will not object, do it in our airspace.’”
Theoretically, the proposal would apply to any missile crossing western Ukraine toward Poland. The minister called this option self-defense, noting that the idea is being studied.
