From: Ira Kapitonova from Kyiv (Day 873 – not sure when or if it will go through because of the power outage)
Have mercy upon us, O Lord,
have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough
of the scorn of those who are at ease,
of the contempt of the proud.
Psalm 123:3-4
While some may think that this war in Ukraine is something too distant to be concerned about, I see more and more how everything is interconnected.
Today, I read about a mercenary from Cuba. He was the only one captured alive. A report about him will be published by «Diario las Americas» (for those of you who might have access and be interested).
Some heartbreaking things from this mercenary:
– he kept repeating that the food in Ukrainian captivity (even after the missile strike about a block away) is much better than what he could afford back home
– said he was recruited by a Spanish-speaking Russian who bought him a ticket to Moscow. He signed a contract in Russian (not understanding a word) and was sent straight to the frontline (with all communication in Russian and his not understanding anything)
– said the bodies of killed mercenaries are most often left in the field
– said the situation in Cuba is so dire that no words of his would convince his compatriots not to become mercenaries. Dying in a battle doesn’t seem too big of a problem for them
– said he’d rather spend 50 years in a Ukrainian prison than go back to Cuba.
Russia keeps looking for mercenaries in Latin America, Africa, poor Asian countries. They keep looking for desperate people to send them to certain death. It’s wrong on so many levels! And it’s also a reminder for me that not just Ukraine but the whole world needs our prayers. May the Lord’s light shine and may His will be done in all the earth.
