May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who made heaven and earth!
Psalm 134:3
You might have already seen this news as it was published in NYT. Apparently, about two weeks ago, Russian minister of defense called the US officials to inform them about detected Ukrainian covert operation in the works against Russia. After that call, Americans contacted the Ukrainian side and said, essentially, if you’re thinking about doing something like this, don’t.
This leaves me baffled. We greatly appreciate all the military aid provided to Ukraine. We know we wouldn’t have been able to survive without it. However, over the past years Ukraine has proved that we adhere to the international laws. We do not target civilians, but there are legitimate military targets beyond the territory of Ukraine, and without destroying them we’re not really defending ourselves.
Someone compared these limitations to a boxer commanded to fight with one hand tied behind his back. Is that fair? You either fight according to the rules, or pretend to fight the “if you lose you win” game. Over the past two years, the operations that unnerved the United States included a strike on a Russian air base on the western coast of Crimea (which is Ukraine’s legal territory), a truck bombing that destroyed part of the Kerch Strait Bridge (which was built illegally and links Russia to Ukraine’s Crimea), and drone strikes on military targets deep inside Russia. And these military operations unnerve our allies while bombing of Ukraine’s children’s hospitals don’t as much?
If you agree that Ukraine should have the right to defend itself and win this war, encourage your government to provide military aid to Ukraine and allow our army to strike legal military targets in Russia.
