7/30/2024 — Small Victories…

From: Maia Mikhaluk (887th day) — The best news we are all looking forward to is the end of the war and the Victory of Ukraine. We know there will be a day when we will be celebrating that wonderful news! Meanwhile, what constitutes good news today is the announcement that tomorrow, we will not have blackouts – we will have electricity all day! For my friends living outside of Ukraine, it probably doesn’t sound like a big deal, but for Ukrainians, that’s a victory of its own. Ruzzians wage relentless war against our energy infrastructure in hopes of torturing Ukrainians into submission. Blackouts complicate life, though amazingly, people adjust and find ways to continue functioning.

The fact that there will be no blackouts tomorrow feels like a small victory of light over darkness, a victory of hard work over evil destruction. Of course, we know it’s only tomorrow that we are promised electricity for the whole day, but it still feels good!

This news also reminded me of Briana’s new way of saying goodbyes. She started doing it sometime after Easter. When parting ways, she often says enthusiastically, “Christ is Risen! Have a nice day!” It always sounds like such an encouraging reminder of the ultimate Good News and the reason for having a hopeful day, even amid the war and blackouts.

  1. Psalm 44:1-8 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob. Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
