7/3/2024 — Sounds of our peaceful past make you forget about the war just for a moment and appreciate the life God gave you today.

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 891 – missed day 890)

Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!
Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.
Psalm 141:9-10

I’m listening to the crickets chirping as I’m writing this post. Sounds… I’ve been thinking about them lately. We don’t always register the sounds that are too familiar and fill our daily lives. I remember how our son was about two years old when he first learned the concept of sound and was fascinated that you can’t see sounds. Being invisible, sounds allow our imagination or our past to paint the picture. Some sounds will bring heartwarming childhood memories, while others may get your blood rushing through your veins in fear.
Our perception of sounds changes, too.

The sound of an airplane may be a little disturbing because you can’t always tell the difference between it and a missile.
A helicopter sound feels safe because you know that enemy helicopters don’t go that far. Still, you’re also wondering if this helicopter may be transporting wounded soldiers or going on a dangerous mission.
A thunderstorm sounds terrifying, especially if it is too close and makes your windows rattle. It’s too similar to an explosion sound.
An ambulance siren can be mistaken for an air raid siren, so you freeze for a moment, checking which one it is.
A motorcycle revving up in the street sounds just like an enemy drone, so it’s a scary sound.
The humming of generators sounds both hopeful and anxious. It tells you that the power is out, yet it helps you remember that people are not giving up.

Crickets chirping at night, birds singing at dawn, children laughing at playgrounds – these sounds of our peaceful past make you forget about the war just for a moment and appreciate the life God gave you today.
