One of the key advantages of the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk Oblast is the replenishment of the prisoner exchange fund with captured Russian soldiers and officers, Major Maksym Zhorin said on Telegram on Aug. 12.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine could benefit significantly from capturing a large number of Russian soldiers, especially if they include members of the Akhmat unit, which is controlled by warlord Ramzan Kadyrov, according to the deputy commander of the 3rd Separate Mechanized Brigade.
“Prisoner exchanges are now very rare and difficult, primarily due to the insufficient number of captured Russians and because Russia doesn’t care about its people, except for certain categories,” wrote Zhorin.
“And these specific categories are among the captured Russian soldiers. Even Russian conscripts will have to be exchanged because the situation has become too public—it’s no longer possible to pretend they weren’t there.”
Situation with Captured Russian Soldiers
OSINT analysts shared a photo on Aug. 7 that allegedly shows Russian soldiers being led into Ukrainian territory near the Sudzha checkpoint in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Investigators from the CIT project believe these photos could depict Russian conscripts.
