8/13/2024 — When you see such a great thirst for life, one wants to believe it will outpower the war…

Today’s picture is of a newborn in Pokrovsk. Photo by Yan Dobronosov.

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 901)

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 1:5-6

I saw a picture of a baby today. Completely ordinary, you might say. It reminded me of my son’s newborn photos and made me think of several friends who are expecting. What’s so special about this baby then? This baby was born yesterday, only about 20 km (just under 15 miles) from the frontline.

You might remember the names of cities devoured by this war – Avdiivka, Mariinka, Bakhmut. Well, Pokrovsk is the next city on Russia’s list. And while the troops are slowly advancing, leaving nothing but scorched earth behind, Pokrovsk does its best to keep living – they mow their lawns and take out garbage, they plant flower beds and keep beauty salons, coffee shops, and restaurants open. They have a maternity hospital (the only one in the Donetsk region) and even recently opened an NICU.

When you see such a great thirst for life, one wants to believe it will outpower the war.

Please pray for Pokrovsk and all the frontline cities. And pray for the newborn babies whose first days on earth are filled with the sounds of explosions.
