Six Ukrainian children have been returned from Russian-occupied territory to Ukrainian-controlled areas with their families, Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets reported on Aug. 13.

The children were forced to attend Russian schools, celebrate Russian holidays, and were pressured to obtain Russian identification documents.
Armed Russian forces frequently raided the families’ homes, conducting unwarranted searches that further added to the families’ distress.
“The sense of powerlessness, restriction, and the realization of what kind of future awaited their children became the driving force behind their decision to leave,” Lubinets said.
