8/14/2024 — Ukrenergo wins key ruling in Paris tribunal over Crimea energy assets

A Paris arbitration tribunal has ruled it has jurisdiction to hear the Ukrainian energy company’s 2019 claims against Russia, Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyi announced on Facebook on Aug.13.

From: New Voice of Ukraine 🇺🇦 The Ukrainian energy operator is suing Russia for the illegal seizure of its assets and investments in Crimea, seeking €527 million in damages. Kudrytskyi noted that the case involves at least 17 high-voltage substations and over 1,300 kilometers of power lines that were taken during the annexation of Crimea. 

The arbitration process, ongoing since November 2020, has seen active defense from Russia, with representatives from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office attending hearings in Paris in September 2023.

Kudrytskyi stated that after 11 months of analysis, the tribunal has ruled on jurisdiction, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration will now set a schedule for the hearings on the merits of the case. He expressed confidence that Ukraine will prevail and that Russia will ultimately pay for the damage done to Ukraine’s energy system.
