8/18/2024 — “Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels…”

From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 906 – missed day 905)

Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may exult in you.
Psalm 5:10-11

We went to an event today. It was held in memory of the rebellion of the local people against the Soviets in 1919-1921. Back then, the villagers got upset because of the insane quota they had to pay from their harvest, so they decided to take matters into their own hands. The rebellion was crushed with incredible cruelty, yet this was just the beginning of what was to come.

For decades, those events were kept secret, and only an eyewitness, an immigrant, was able to publish a book about them and send it to Ukraine in a secret suitcase compartment.

Today’s event had the phrase “Memory is a weapon” as part of their slogan. I kept thinking it must be true. Because the Russians now try to destroy our memory or forge it justifying their actions. Yet memory is a weapon, and that’s why we’ll keep remembering our past and tell our children about today’s present.
