On Aug. 17, Ukrainian cyber specialists from HUR military intelligence and the hacker group BO Team reportedly paralyzed the operations of a Russian nuclear weapons institute by launching a cyberattack on its internet provider Vega. Activists reported this to Ukrinform on Aug. 17.
The hackers stated that the results of the attack exceeded all expectations, disabling 1,173 switches and 10 servers of the provider, with all the information on them completely destroyed.
βAs a result, internet and communication services for a number of the cityβs strategic businesses have been blocked for five consecutive days, and the prospects for their full recovery remain bleak,β the activists added.
According to BO Team, Vega is the only provider in Snezhinsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, and the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Technical Physics (the developer of nuclear warheads) is exclusively connected to this provider.
βThe most important outcome for our hackers is obtaining the personal data and documents of this plant, which is under sanctions. Itβs already clear who and how they are helping the institute to bypass these sanctions. The obtained communications and comments from local social media groups suggest that the cyberattack could disrupt the state defense order,β the hackers stated.
