From: Roman Sheremeta — Russia has been pushing for cease-fire talks with Ukraine. Now, because of an unexpected attack on Kursk, these talks are off. Why? Because, such negotiations would not be good for russia anymore.
Putin has said many times that “any peace agreement should take into account the facts on the ground” and that russia will not leave the territory it has taken. Well, if “any negotiations have to respect realities on the ground,” then parts of russia will now become Ukraine.
Giving up a part of russia would be the worst defeat in russian history. So, Putin can no longer follow his own “rules.”
A major consequence of the Ukrainian attack on Kursk is that it shows that Putin is not serious about any of his “rules”. As long as his rules benefit him, he is ready to negotiate. But when it doesn’t fit him, he changes the rules.
The only language Putin understands is the language of force. As John McCain once said: “There’s nothing that provokes Vladimir Putin more than weakness.” The only way to stop russian aggression is to give Ukraine all the means to kick russia out.
