Following a breakthrough by Ukrainian forces in Kursk Oblast, intense infighting has begun within Russia’s FSB security service, independent Russian outlet Important Stories reported on Aug. 19, citing sources close to the intelligence agency.

The journalists write that FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov may soon leave his post. His first deputy, Sergey Korolev, and the head of the counterintelligence service, Vladislav Menshikov, may be promoted.

The report adds that Alexei Sedov, head of the FSB’s service for the “protection of the constitutional order,” is also likely to leave his position. Sedov’s department is responsible for the persecution of Russian opposition and the assassinations of Kremlin’s political opponents.

Sources close to the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has appointed his former bodyguard, Alexei Dyumin, to oversee the defense of Kursk Oblast. This appointment suggests that Putin does not trust the General Staff and relies solely on those personally loyal to him in crisis situations.
