O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart;
you will incline your ear
to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
Psalm 10:17-18

I often think about people living close to the border with Russia. I doubt they specifically chose to live there. It must have been the land where their parents and grandparents lived. Yet, they experience unbelievable hardships.

I read about a farmer from the Sumy region. Until recently, he had cows, bulls, and calves, but most of them were killed when his farmyard was bombed with guided aerial bombs. Now, the farmer leaves the rubble of his household behind and tries to evacuate along with the few surviving livestock. He matter-of-factly tells the story of his fellow villagers and even his friends blown up on mines. Yet, in all his anxiety, he finishes with the hopeful “tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”

Sometimes I think that our people have experienced several lifetimes’ worth of loss and grief, yet every time I am amazed by their ability to keep hoping despite circumstances.

Let’s pray for those who lost everything and need to start life anew.
