On the 10th anniversary of the battles for Ilovaisk in Donetsk Oblast, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, declaredthat Aug. 29 will always remind Ukraine of the treachery and deceitfulness of the aggressor state, Russia, which cannot be trusted.
“Any negotiations with terrorists and murderers are a deadly dangerous endeavor,” said the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
“Ilovaisk is not just a tragic event in Ukraine’s history; it is also a testament to Ukrainian resilience, an act of bravery and heroism by Ukrainian soldiers,” Syrskyi wrote on Facebook.
βDespite losses and enemy deceit, our soldiers did not surrender but continued to break through the trap and fight.β
The army chief expressed his gratitude to the parents of those who gave their lives for the independence and freedom of Ukraine.
Ukraine commemorates the defenders who died in the struggle for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the country on Aug. 29. This day also marks the Day of Remembrance for the Ilovaisk tragedy. Ten years ago, near Ilovaisk in Donetsk Oblast, a total of 368 Ukrainian soldiers were killed, and 18 are still considered missing. This event marked the single greatest loss for Ukraine during the Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation.
