U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated on Sept. 6 that Ukraine is steadily gaining the initiative on the front lines while Russia is paying a steep price for Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions.
“We meet at a dynamic moment. Ukraine continues to take the initiative on the battlefield. Ukrainian troops are currently conducting an operation in the Kursk region of Russia,” he said at the beginning of the meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Austin stressed that the army of the aggressor country is forced to defend itself on its own territory.
“But we know that Putin’s anger is deep. Moscow continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine, especially around Pokrovsk. Putin transfers his troops to Kursk,” he said.
The head of the Pentagon called the Kremlin’s attacks on civilians in Ukraine outrageous. He added that Ukraine refuses to surrender.
“Russia has paid a huge price for Putin’s imperial fantasies. More than 350,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since Putin launched his full-scale invasion,” Austin said.
