The European Commission will provide Ukraine with €40 million to repair energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on social media platform X on Friday, Aug. 6.

“Russia continues to relentlessly attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Temperatures will drop soon, so we’re ramping up humanitarian aid for Ukrainians in need,” von der Leyen wrote.

Ukraine’s energy system under strain

On May 20, Ukraine’s national energy company, Ukrenergo, reported that all major thermal and hydroelectric power plants in the country had been damaged by Russian strikes. Since March 22, 2024, Russia has launched eight missile and drone attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy grid.

On Aug. 26, Russia launched another attack, using 127 missiles and 109 strike drones. Ukraine’s Air Force managed to shoot down 102 missiles and 99 drones. Russia’s targets included the Kyiv Hydroelectric Plant. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said 15 regions were affected by the strikes, while Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko described the situation in the sector as critical.
