From: Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 931)
O Lord, let me not be put to shame,
for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
let them go silently to Sheol.
Psalm 31:17
Many apartment buildings in Kyiv have a tiny room by the entrance for someone who serves as a doorkeeper and janitor. We call these people concierge, and most of the time, you’d find an older lady there who often commutes to Kyiv from a smaller town or even another region for her 3-day shift. It gives her some extra cash to add to the government pension she gets.
We’ve been blessed to have good relationships with our concierges, mainly because our son loved getting to know other people.
The other day, we were coming home from school, and I stopped to chat with our concierge, who just started her shift. She talked to my son, asked him about school, and then told me about her grandson, who is about my son’s age. They live in the Sumy region, so because of their proximity to the Russian border, online learning is the only option for her grandson. Still, even their online lessons are interrupted by air raids and power outages. With tears in her eyes, this lady told me that lots of districts in the Sumy region are being evacuated and how she prays their town would not get on that list.
She was trying to be cheerful, hugged my son, and said everything would be good because she prayed, but I could feel her heartache.
It’s impossible not to notice this war. It’s seeped too deep into our lives.
Please pray for the Sumy region as well as all the towns along the Russian border. May the Lord send His angels to protect the innocent and stop the oppressors.
