On Friday, Sep. 13, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Kremlin is using Russian state media outlet RTto conduct cyberintelligence and covert influence operations worldwide, while also helping to secure weapons for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“Today, we’re exposing how Russia deploys similar tactics around the world,” Blinken said. “Russia’s weaponization of disinformation to subvert and polarize free and open societies extends everywhere.”

Strict sanctions, visa restrictions, and other measures were imposed by the State Department.

This logical and long-awaited move highlights a key issue. Russia’s authoritarian machine is outpacing the slow-moving American democratic bureaucracy in the information battlefield of global discourse.

In an age where the line between information and influence is increasingly blurred, the war over narratives has become a key front in international relations. From Cold War propaganda to today’s digital disinformation, Russia’s dark portrayal of the U.S. remains a central theme. But this isn’t just about foreign policy—it’s about shaping opinions, influencing public sentiment, and impacting the daily lives of Americans.

Russia’s goal is clear: deepen divisions within American society, heighten political and social tensions, and divert U.S. attention away from critical foreign policy priorities like supporting Ukraine.
