European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed urgent steps to shore up Ukraine’s energy sector before the coming winter, Zelenskyy said in his Sept. 20 evening address.

Von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv with a program to ensure that Ukraine can get through the heating season after Russian air strikes have destroyed much of the country’s power plants. The Ukrainian president described EU’s support as “essential.”

“The EU has introduced a new energy package for us worth EUR 160 million [$179 million],” said Zelenskyy.

“Additionally, we have agreed on increasing electricity imports to Ukraine, which will undoubtedly support our state and citizens in challenging situations. We discussed with Ursula steps that will help us preserve at least a quarter of our [pre-war] power generation.”

Earlier on Sept. 20, von der Leyen announced that the European Commission developed a “winter plan” for Ukraine.
