Russia destroyed all thermal power plants and a significant portion of hydroelectric power plants in Ukraine, potentially leaving millions without heating this winter, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at the UN General Assembly on Sept. 25.
“As of today, Russia has destroyed all our thermal power plants and a significant part of our hydroelectric capacities,” Zelenskyy said, speaking during the general debate.
“This is how [Russian dictator Vladimir] Putin is preparing for winter, hoping that millions of Ukrainians will suffer in darkness and cold, [forcing] Ukraine to suffer and surrender. Just imagine if 80% of your country’s energy system was destroyed — what kind of life would that be.”
According to Zelenskyy, “this is exactly what Putin wants.”
“He wants to leave children, women, and elderly people without heating in the winter and cause suffering for ordinary people,” the president added.
Energy situation in Ukraine
Data from the Ministry of Energy shows that Ukrainian energy infrastructure has been targeted 1,024 times by Russian attacks from October 2022 to September 2024.
