There are “no conditions” under which Kyiv could resume its nuclear weapons program, head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, told RFE/RL on Oct. 18.
Yermak reiterated that Ukraine had previously gave up its nuclear weapons, and the current focus is on receiving security guarantees from other nuclear powers.
“We are not considering this,” he said.
“We renounced [nuclear weapons]—this is our international commitment, and unlike [Russia], we do not violate international obligations.”
Previously, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine must be admitted into NATO, since the only other way to ensure national security for Kyiv lies in nuclear weapons.
Zelenskyy cited the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, under which the United States, the UK, and France pledged to guarantee Ukraine’s territorial integrity in exchange for giving up its post-Soviet nuclear arsenal.
