South Korea is considering sending its military personnel to Ukraine following North Korea’s deployment of troops to prop up the Russian invasion, Newsweek reported on Oct. 21.
Reports from South Korean media, citing intelligence sources, indicate that the government is “reviewing a plan to send an appropriate number of personnel, including intelligence officers [specialized in North Korea] and experts in enemy tactics,” to Ukraine.
It is noted that South Korean personnel in Ukraine would conduct interrogations or provide translation services if North Korean soldiers are captured by Ukrainian forces. They will also provide Kyiv with information on North Korea’s military tactics, doctrine, and operations.
In a subsequent briefing, South Koreaโs Defense Ministry stated it would “consider with an open mind” the potential supply of lethal weapons to Ukraine.
On Oct. 21, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that North Korean troop deployment to participate in combat operations in Ukraine would represent a โsignificant escalation.โ
