The United States is preparing a separate $800 million funding package to support Ukraine’s domestic drone production, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his Oct. 21 evening address.
“Ukraine is grateful for this support,” said Zelenskyy.
“We need to ensure that, despite any global political threats, Ukraine can consistently defend its sovereignty and independence.”
The president added that U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a $400 million security assistance during his unannounced visit to Kyiv on Oct. 21. The Pentagon subsequently stated that the package includes ammunition for HIMARS rocket artillery systems, 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, and M113 armored personnel carriers.
Zelenskyy and Austin also discussed further steps to shore up Ukraine’s air defense system and preparations for a potential winter energy crisis.
