Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the notion that everything depends on the outcome of the U.S. presidential election in his online interview with The Times of India on Oct. 28.

“Much, but not everything,” he said, acknowledging the importance of Washington’s support but pointing out that Ukraine survived the beginning of the war “without the support of its allies, including the United States.”

“The unity of the Ukrainian people, the strength of our society – this is what repelled the Russian attack.”

Zelenskyy thanked the allies for their help and stressed that Ukraine cannot retake the occupied territories on its own.

He believes that regardless of who becomes president, “bipartisan support for Ukraine will remain,” and the U.S. Congress will have an impact on the policy and the course of the war. “Although the president will continue to shape international policy because it is his constitutional duty.”

Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of unity within Europe in dealing with the war and highlighted the risks of freezing the war without adequate security guarantees.

“If we freeze the conflict now, without understanding what will happen tomorrow, what security guarantees the Ukrainian people, our children will have, I consider it a very big risk.”

On Sept. 25, Politico wrote that Ukraine had chosen Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its primary mediator for peace talks with Russia.
