Support for Ukraine in the coming months will shape the future of the European Union, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal toldBloomberg Television on Nov. 7, urging his colleagues to do more to protect Kyiv and themselves.

He stressed that allowing Russia to change Ukraine’s borders by force would undermine European values.

He called on his EU partners to increase defense spending to counter the threat from the Kremlin and show to President-elect Donald Trump that Europe takes security seriously.

“The European value-based and rule-based system will also somewhat be decided in the conflict,” he said.

“That probably also will be a mark that will be left on Europe.”

European leaders are meeting in Budapest on Nov. 7 to digest the U.S. election results and try to formulate their first response to the prospect of a second Trump presidential term.

On Nov. 6, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced his visit to the Hungarian capital to meet with Hungarian PM Viktor Orban and European Council President Charles Michel, and to attend the European Political Community summit.
