Czech President Petr Pavel believes Donald Trump may attempt to end the war in Ukraine by negotiating with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, such a deal, he said, might not align with the interests of Ukraine or Europe.

Pavel noted that the current situation in Ukraine seems to be shifting to Russia’s advantage, making it difficult to motivate either side to pursue peace talks. He emphasized that the West, especially Europe, must take greater action and cannot simply wait for a new U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump.
According to Pavel, Western military and financial support has not been sufficient for Ukraine to achieve victory.
“What we saw before was something of a trap. Now, the situation is slightly more favorable for Russia than for Ukraine. And in such a context, motivating both sides to negotiate is challenging,” said the Czech president.
He added that many countries are awaiting a new U.S. administration, hoping that Trump will implement his promised changes and end the war in 24 hours. Pavel doubts this is possible but believes Trump will try to make a deal with Putin. Pavel argues that such a deal would likely not serve Ukraine or Europe’s interests, as it could involve ceding part of Ukraine’s occupied territory to Russia or delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership by at least 20 years.
