If reelected President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin start “deciding Ukraine’s fate,” it could embolden Russia to “finish the job” or even launch a new invasion of its neighbor, writes The Times.
The publication notes that Russia’s war against Ukraine is not a “life-or-death” issue for the United States, especially as Americans face economic hardships caused by inflation.
However, for Eastern Europe—particularly Poland and the Baltic states—it’s a crucial matter. These countries have significantly ramped up their defense spending, fully aware of the gravity of the threat.
The piece warns that if Putin is allowed to keep the land he’s stolen, it would let him further unravel the post-1989 order.
While Europe may be unable to stop Trump from making decisions about Ukraine, it can influence them, The Times adds.
“Europe certainly has the power and the responsibility to support Kyiv. The United Kingdom must continue leading these efforts, and the White House should ensure its allies are ready to keep providing aid and weapons to Ukrainian forces,” the report says.
