Ukraine is testing out new messaging as it lobbies for Americans’ support far beyond Washington.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — Donald Trump traveled deep into America’s heartland to win support during his three runs for president. Ukraine is hoping the same strategy will help it get more backers for its defense against Russia.
A top official from Ukraine’s embassy visited Louisville on Thursday to make the country’s case for ongoing financial and weapons support in sessions with community leaders, nonprofit groups and even high-schoolers.
Ukrainian officials have made a number of visits to U.S. communities in their three-year campaign to drum up support following Russia’s invasion of their country. Their efforts included a high-profile visit by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to an Army munitions plant in Scranton, Pennsylvania in September. The idea of such trips has been to win the hearts and minds of the American public, and therefore maybe their representatives in Congress.
But Kyiv’s campaign is taking on new urgency — and new angles — now that Trump’s win has thrown support for Ukraine even further into doubt.
