U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing former intelligence chief Richard Grenell as a special representative on Russia’s war against Ukraine, Reuters reports, citing sources.
Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence during his 2017-2021 presidency, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to halt Russian aggression if appointed.
According to four sources, there is currently no special envoy solely focused on resolving the Russia-Ukraine war, but Trump is considering creating such a position.
The sources added that while Trump is seriously considering this move, he might not create the role. Additionally, there is no guarantee Grenell would accept the position.
During a Bloomberg roundtable in July, Grenell supported the idea of creating “autonomous zones” to address the Russia-Ukraine war. He also suggested he would not back Ukraine’s NATO membership in the near future.
