12/5/2024 — Ukrainian Foreign Minister brings Budapest Memorandum to NATO summit to highlight broken commitments

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha brought Ukraine’s copy of the memorandum to the Ukraine-NATO summit to remind international partners of their commitments, BBC wrote on Dec. 5.

The publication released rare photographs of the Budapest Memorandum, signed 30 years ago, in which Ukraine relinquished its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

“This Memorandum is often said to be not worth the paper it’s written on,” the journalists noted.

“It was signed exactly 30 years ago when Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons for security assurances. Two decades later, it became clear these agreements are ineffective.”
