Today marks a sad anniversary – 30 years since Ukraine signed Budapest Memorandum. At the time of gaining independence, Ukraine had at its disposal the third largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the world. After the signing of the Budapest Memorandum in 1994, Ukraine renounced the status of a nuclear power, and the USA, Britain and ruzzia ( later joined by China and France) in return, provided Kyiv with guarantees of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
For over 10 years now, ruzzia has been attacking Ukraine, while other guarantors of our sovereignty have been “deeply concerned” for 7 years and the last two years started reluctantly and slowly helping with weapons in small enough doses to help Ukraine to continue fighting but not allowing to defeat ruzzia. If our Western partners really wanted to keep international laws and agreements in place and protect Ukraine, there wouldn’t be war. Putin knows that his bullying is working, even though not as effectively as it did in the past. Putin used nuclear threats so much in the past 1000+ days that it’s becoming less convincing even to the scared West.
The West is still concerned about putin’s nuclear weapons. Ironically, if Ukraine didn’t give up our nuclear weapons putin wouldn’t dare to attack us and if he did, the West would really help for that same fear of nuclear conflict.
