The focus should be on pressuring Russia, rather than Ukraine, to engage in peace negotiations, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said, German broadcaster DW reported on Dec. 16.
His statement echoes earlier European leaders calls to strengthen Ukraine’s position rather than just pressuring Kyiv to hold talks with Russia.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted preparing Ukraine for success by 2025, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged postponing peace talks until sufficient Western military support enables Ukraine to gain leverage on the battlefield.
“The division of responsibilities should be such that both the United States and the European Union help Ukraine achieve a better negotiating position for any potential future talks, to which the aggressor, not the victim, must be encouraged and pressured,” Sikorski said.
EU needs to “mobilize even further” before Donald Trump takes the office, he added.
