From: Roman Sheremeta — You have to watch this video! This is the original version of the “Carols of the Bells.” It was written by a Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. The song is called “Shchedryk” and it is about the turning of the seasons from winter to spring. It is a song of hope and reassurance that the light will triumph over darkness. Please remember this when you hear “Carols of the Bells” next time: A Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, who wrote the original song, was killed by russians on 23rd of January 1921. He was 43 when russian killed him. He was just one of the hundreds of Ukrainian artists, composers, poets, writers, and scientists killed by the soviets after Ukraine lost to russia in 1919. Because Ukrainian culture is a threat to russian imperialistic myths. According to them, Ukrainians are a “nation of peasants” and can’t have culture. Unfortunately, the genocide continues today. Many Ukrainian writers, actors, musicians were executed in the areas occupied by russians. Others have put off musical instruments and took guns to defend their country. That’s why Ukrainian fight – they don’t want to allow russian genocide again.
