Former US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who also served as CIA director and now heads the Panetta Institute for Public Policy, has called for the United States to supply Ukraine with a system akin to Israel’s Iron Dome.
In comments to Liga.net, Panetta highlighted the effectiveness of Israel’s missile defense system, which intercepts over 90% of rockets launched from Iran and other states.
“Kyiv must have the same capability. We should give more now. The goal is to enable Ukraine to regain the initiative in the war and to make Putin understand that he cannot succeed,” Panetta said.
Discussing Russia’s threats against NATO countries, Panetta stressed that the United States must clearly demonstrate its readiness to use military force. He argued that the only language Russian dictator Vladimir Putin understands is strength.
“We must make it clear to [Putin] that under no circumstances will we allow Russia to succeed in Ukraine. This means providing Kyiv with advanced weapons, the capability to strike targets inside Russia if necessary, and destroying drones and missiles before they hit Ukrainian soil,” Panetta emphasized.
